Mutai makes new record in the marathon in New York

Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai, author of the best record in the history of the downstroke of Boston (2h03: 02), got the victory today in the New York Marathon with a record of the race (2h05: 06), followed by fellow Emmanuel Mutai, which came half minutes later.

The Ethiopian Gebre Gebremariam, the defending champion, was only fourth, behind fellow Tsehay Kebede.

In the women of Ethiopia Firehiwot Given, debuting in the Big Apple while three-time winner in Rome, broke in the last two kilometers, with a time of 2h23: 15, the favorite, the Kenyan Mary Keitany, who had done it alone in the lead almost all the evidence and ultimately finished third, behind the Ethiopian also Buzunesh Deba (2h23: 19).

In front of a mass of 47,000 runners, the group of favorites in the men stood together in the first half of the tour, which was passed in 1h03: 17, a partial harbinger of a new race record in New York, held today the Ethiopian Tesfaye Jifar with his brand of 2h07: 43 achieved in 2001.

Gebremariam, who stood in the front group for their height and wool cap, was carried away to the rhythm of Emmanuel Mutai in front of a selection of seven riders to pass through the km. 30 (1h29: 45).

But it was the other Mutai, Geoffrey, no relation to the above, gave a sharp tug to 10 km. the target and at times the race became a duel Ethiopian-Kenyan with two representatives per country.

For brands, the favorite was Geoffrey, who succeeded in the downstroke of Boston (136 vertical meters) a record of 2h03: 02 and has another 2h04: 40 achieved last year to win in London, England Test record and in 2010 had been second in New York, behind Gebremariam.

The latter, the defending champion, had to shed the hat to meet the challenge of Geoffrey, but could not keep up and ended up paying mighty effort.

In the women, in the absence of the injured Edna Kiplagat, world champion and winner here in 2010, another Kenyan, Mary Keitany, half-marathon world record holder (1h05: 50), starred in most of the race, but was beaten in the last mile by two Ethiopians: As three-time winner in Rome and New York debutante, and Buzunesh Deba.

Third last year, Keitany, who won in London in April 2h19: 19, left alone since the first few miles and opened a big advantage over their opponents.

Midway through the trial had more than two minutes on a tracker with the Ethiopian quartet Firehiwot Given, Buzunesh Deba and Werknesh Kidane and Kenyan Cheptonui Kilele, but from the accused km.30 effort and the pace dropped markedly.

Done and Deba were left alone in pursuit of Keitany and closed the gap to reach the km.39. The Kenyan wanted to return to escape, but could only pick a Deba. Since the pulse endured and finished it off in the penultimate mile.
