Kasey Keller retires at the top

Goalkeeper Kasey Keller, Seattle Sounders, has football left to the regular season and the Goalkeeper of the Year Award, a distinction which the Colombian Farid Mondragon was in second place.

Keller, 41, 20 professional and the last three with the Sounders, could not get the title of Major League Soccer USA (MLS), but won three trophies from the U.S. Open Cup.

Besides Keller played every minute in the regular season games helped the Sounders have the second best record in the MLS, only surpassed by the Los Angeles Galaxy.

He also helped the Sounders to reach the Western Conference semifinals where they were eliminated by Real Salt Lake.

His contribution to the team was a 76 percent success rate at stops he made. In nine games did not allow a goal.

Keller, a native of Olympia (Washington), became the idol of the home crowd, which paid tribute to the CenturyLing Field, home of the Sounders with a record attendance of 64,000 spectators on average.

The award came in the final season of his contract with the Sounders and he also was named to the All-Star Game MLS and included in the 2011 Dream Team.

Following Keller and Mondragon, the third in the voting among players, team representatives and journalists, went to Kevin Hartman, Dallas, and the fourth for Hispanics Nick Rimando, Real Salt Lake.
