Albert Montanes of Spain new tennis champion

The Tarragona Albert Montanes has achieved the title of absolute champion by defeating Spain in the final to Barcelona Pere Riba, who has retired due to injury when the game was favorable to the 6-4, 3-0.

Montanes, 30 and number 53 in the ATP rankings, has been a prize of 16,000 euros, 8,000 of his rival, in issue number 98 of the Championship of Spain, which this year has played at the Club Deportivo Laieta of Barcelona.

Riba, 23 and number 75 in world rankings, has retired because of an intercostal muscle contracture.

They had already fought two games of the ATP last year. The first was won Riba in Hamburg, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (4), and then, in expenses, the victory went to Montanes 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5 ).

Montanes, the tournament top seed, agreed to the final after the Biscayan times yesterday Guillermo Olaso in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-0), while Pere Riba, seeded second, did the same by winning the Spaniard Pedro Clar (6-3, 6-4).

The Championship doubles title went to Spain's Guillermo Olaso and Pere Riba, who overcame a double 6-2 victory over Barcelona Marc Fornell and Miguel Angel Lopez Jaen Elche.
