Death of boxing legend Joe Frazier

The former world champion in the heavyweight and Hall of Fame, Joe Frazier, died tonight in Philadelphia at the age of 67 years as a result of liver cancer.

The news was relayed by his representative, Leslie Wolff, and confirmed in a statement his family.

Frazier, popularly known as 'Smokin Joe' will go down in history as the first boxer to beat Muhammad Ali in the 'battle of the century', held on March 8, 1971 at Madison Square Garden.

Both sides would meet again on two other occasions. One in January 1974 on the same stage and in October 1975 in Manila, but on these occasions Ali was the winner.

Frazier retired in 1976 with an impeccable track record 4/1/32, but fought for the last time in 1981 in an extraordinary way. Their only losses came against George Foreman and Ali.

The historic fighter was in a hospice after she was diagnosed several weeks ago suffering from liver cancer that ended his life quickly.

Before having been discovered cancer, Frazier was making normal life, with regular appearances in public, sign autographs, including the last one was last September in Las Vegas, but had lost most of the money he amassed during his years of glory . Currently living in an apartment above the gym where he trained young boxing talents.
